Cataract
Surgery?

As a Hattiesburg area cataract specialist, Dr. Cooley encounters many patients who believe that poor vision is a part of the aging process. However, poor vision due to a cataract can be fixed with a simple surgery procedure.

What is a Cataract?

What is a Cataract?

A cataract is the eluding of the natural lens inside your eye. The lens of your eye is located behind the iris, or colored part of your eye, and functions much like the lens of a camera. In our early years, the lens is clear, and light is able to enter the eye and focus on the retina, allowing us to see detailed images clearly.

As we age, the lens begins to cloud. Similar to taking a picture with a camera that has a dirty lens, the picture also appears cloudy. When light enters the eye and passes through the cloudy lens, called a cataract, vision appears blurry and may seem as though you have film over your vision.

Cataracts are usually slow to progress, and changes in vision can be so gradual that many people do not realize their vision is decreasing. For some people, difficulty seeing at night is the first noticeable sign of a cataract. For example, bright lights from oncoming traffic may seem blinding, making night driving almost impossible.

When is it time to think about Cataract removal?

When cataracts begin to noticeably affect the quality of your vision and new glasses or contact lens prescriptions are no longer able to help, it is time to consider having the cataracts removed.

Common Cataract symptoms:

· Blurring of vision

· Double vision in one eye

· Glare or light sensitivity

· Needing brighter light to read

· Poor night vision

· Fading or yellowing of colors

About the Cataract procedure:

About the Cataract procedure:

There has never been a better time to have a cataract procedure! Thanks to major advancements in technology, today’s cataract procedure is considered one of the safest surgical procedures in all of medicine.

Today’s cataract procedure is virtually painless and is performed on an outpatient basis, taking approximately 10 minutes and involves no stitches. In fact, a majority of patients are able to resume most normal activities the very next day.

During the cataract procedure, the Cody lens is removed using ultrasonic wave technology and a clear artificial lens is put in place of the old lens. This procedure restores your vision so that light is once again able to enter your eye properly and allow you to see images clearly as you had prior to the onset of the cataract.
